This place has been here since I was a kid. Still makes great burgers and shakes. Not many places like this left go while you still can an experience the nostalgia of the fast food past.

Best late night food in Berkeley. They have been here longer than almost everything else in this town and rumor has it there’s a picture of Smokehouse mounted inside city hall. Open until 1:30 AM, I love this popular, post partying destination to death.

Popular 50s style American fast food, with outdoor eating areas and a wide variety of shakes. Inexpensive and fresh.

Surprisingly one of the best burger places in the Berkeley area. Prices are great and portion sizes are big!

Slinging delicious burgers since 1951 and I’ll definitely get a double next time. one order of fries is enough to share unless you really like fries.

Delicious burgers and huge bags of fries at very affordable prices. The beef on the patties are very flavorful. There is some indoor seating plus outdoor patio seating with umbrellas. We came in the middle of winter and it was chilly inside. Highly recommended if you are hungry and looking for a greasy burger!

Tastes like home!! Polite staff and the best fries! I hardly ever eat fries unless I cook them myself but these are great

Wow! What a little gem in the 💓 of the outskirts of Berkeley. They have been there since 1952. It's one of the few remaining burger and hot dog joints around. Fast friendly service and yummy treats. I had a cheese dog, fries and a lemonade. I think I paid about $7. Good price, eh? They have covered outdoor seating and a casual, easy vibe.

If you stop by looking for their award winning pit-smoked ribs or chicken, or succulent slabs of beef, continue along sadly, this place is an oddly named hamburger and milkshake shack. And their burgers and milkshakes are wonderful, would come back in a heartbeat for them, if on the area wanting a burger.The fries were my second major disappointment. Although bountiful in volume, they were noticeably over cooked, and mostly all smaller pieces.I may have been generous with my 4 star rating, but it was my first ever visit, and really was expecting something different, but that's my fault. As a burger joint, it's good; better than average.

The food is good i like the hot dogs. Very inexpensive love it.

I had the double chili burger and it was very average. Good for the price but taste was mediocre at best. Hamburger meat was dry and lacked flavor. Good if you need a quick meal.

It's good food reasonable prices nice sitting outside in the sun inside also. last time I was there I had a bad experience which is never happened beforethe gear took my order and I also asked that's for here she doesn't say anything at all 55 minutes to closing time which is all I need 20 minutes it's fast food .she called my number I was surprised you with my phone the end bags to go I said I ask for here I'm going to eat here she said no we close as soon as I said no it's 55 minutes left so if I'm not going to eat here I don't want the phone or the chair my money then she decided to put it in a tray like she do me a favor I think that was an M professional things to deal with your lady customer I just I want to bring it to everybody attention.

Consistently good burgers. Known the place for 12 years and never disappoints. Must-stop in Berkeley.

Inexpensive. Fresh. Good food but not phenomenal. For the price and nostalgic experience, I'd go back. This reminds me of your traditional mom-and-pop shop. Try it for yourself.

Old school, love it! Good fries, Coke, and hot dogs! Nice outside picnic tables and some indoor space.

I love this place. The burgers have a "Maxwell St." flavor that any Chicagoan will recognize if you get grilled onions added. The fries must come from giant potatoes as they are huge. They're perfectly cooked and come out crispy on the outside and creamy within. The portion size on them is definitely shareable, so take that into consideration.

Best burger joint in the Bay

Atmosphere is non-existent, standard fast food. The prices are good though and it's open quite late. Outdoor seating is a plus but there's plenty of noise with Telegraph Ave right there.

Fresh burgers,no frills. Customer service great. Food served fast. I would return.

If I could give this restaurant a higher rating I would. THE BEST BURGERS IN THE BAY AREA HANDS DOWN!! Owners are great people, always taking care of their customers quickly and efficiently. Easily this place is one of the best burgers I've had. They should expand to LA ;)!!!!

Smokehouse used to be our go-to burger joint coming up as a child. Now they serve burgers that are just dry...what happened?!? And be careful with your order; they are often rushing and messed up my order twice my last two visits. Definitely not the same. 3.5 stars max!

It's a greasy spoon type of place. It's a Berkeley staple. Great burgers and shakes. Downside... They only take cash. No checks, debit or credit card.

Always fresh burgers made to order. Brings me back to those same childhood BBQ burger tastes. Only downfall is no bacon. Overall great spot.

Be aware... massive burger alert. Once you find out how to get your mouth around a corner... you will get blasted with the best burger in the area. I went here with an extremely creditable google (i shouldn't disclose the name) and he said this is the first place we need to go in Berkeley All expectations surpassed!

Fair pricing. Not good quality, not delicious. Shockingly bland for indulgent food. Cheese sauce wasn’t worth the extra calories—even Velveeta is better. Milkshake was similarly unimpressive. Friendly servers. Dreadful lightning—worse than a hospital. Pass.

I’m funny about my food, but here, they have some of the best chili cheese fries I’ve ever tasted. Simply irresistible. Definitely one of my favorite places to eat.

Basic hamburger joint although you can get a chicken sandwich or a grilled cheese also. Berkeley Institution for a million years. Nothing really fancy but comfort food for people that have lived here since the 50s.

Ok not my 1st or 2nd choice and this place is still closed for 7 months now as of 10/07/2019

I grew up in the Midwest, where a burger isn't a $12 affair. This is the only place I know that still makes an old fashion cheap burger that's really good. When I need a good old burger and fries for 5 bucks (kind of a comfort food thing), this is the only place I turn.

There is something magnetic about this place. It might have to do with the ol' fashion burger joint style or the chili cheese fries (or maybe both). However, the burgers are far from memorable

First time here in 15 years. Still pretty tasty. Wish burgers a tad bigger but they are consistent.

This must be popular because its cheap and filling for college students. The food is very poor, the wait for food is excessive, and the establishment’s appearance and vibe borders on that of an old public restroom. I ordered a mixed berry shake and a double cheese burger. The burger meat was unremarkable, but for the most part my sandwich was ruined because someone thought it was a great idea to put 3/4 of a tomato on it. The sandwich was a soggy mess. The fries were pretty thick and meaty, which may have been quite delicious with some more salt. The shake was not bad. I would have rather had the Varsity.

No thanks probably not going there again. Food is affordable but not great. Shakes are kinda thin. Fries are fresh, however.

Great burger joint with a very local vibe. Great hours on the weekend and made to order burgers don't take long. Shakes are basic but in a good way.

Smoking hot Smokehouse is a hit in the belly, of course in a good way, not like a punch in the gut. Depends what You order of course and the quantities, but You will not be disappointed! A super good place for mmm-munchies!
